  • 1 - Our Mission and Services

Educational Solutions has been doing work in more than 40 countries for more than 42 years. Dr. Caleb Gattegno founded Educational Solutions in 1968 in New York City. Our goal is to realize his bold vision for education; where it is recognized as a learning-centered science that is possible to master, and repeat thoughout the world, leading to the elimination of illiteracy and the freedom of all people to choose which skills to spend their time developing. We believe that learning any subject is not a matter of ability or history, only a matter of time.

    What we do:

    • Products: We create products for schools, teachers, homeschools, and parents. Our products are focused on core school subjects, learning to read and write, learning mathematics, and learning to speak foreign languages. Our brand names include Words in Color, Visible & Tangible Math, and The Silent Way.
    • Training: We provide training in the Science of Education and the Subordination of Teaching to Learning. Training programs typically focus on improving the learning yield per measure of teacher-student contact time.
    • Research & Development: We undertake research and development projects to improve teaching and learning. These projects are typically undertaken in partnership with public or private sector organizations.

Towards A Visual Culture Now Available Online

Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s Vision For Educational Television

NEW YORK - Dr. Caleb Gatttegno’s ideas about television and education make for enlightened reading even though it’s been more than 40 years since those ideas were first published in Towards A Visual Culture.

The book, perhaps one of his most concise and to date most prophetic writings, is once again in print and now available to read free online or to download for $5 a copy from the publisher, Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc. (ESWI).

“In Towards a Visual Culture, Dr. Gattegno makes the case that we learn more quickly and comprehensively through sight than language and he sets out a framework for educating through television,” said Eaton Donald, CEO of Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc.

The edition is one of 50 of Dr. Gattegno’s most important books and papers that are being republished throughout the year as part of the celebrations to commemorate 100 years since his birth.

Dr. Gattegno believed TV is a product of our own developing self-awareness as human beings and our growing need to communicate ideas and logic at increasingly higher levels of speed and depth of understanding than what spoken and written words now permit. In the natural evolution of things, Dr. Gattegno believed that visual media would open the door to higher rates of human learning and advancement.

At the time of writing (1969), Dr. Gattegno believed that TV was not yet up to the task of furthering the higher purposes of human awareness, especially in the case of educating children, who he believed were learning nothing of much value from TV except perhaps what goes into the making of beer and cigar commercials.

Dr. Gattegno was, however, certain that the young medium would eventually come around to serving the greater good and he outlined specific steps educators and broadcasters could take to achieve that end more quickly, including making scientific inquiry more entertaining. At the same time, he believed that the broadcasting technology itself had to - and would –become more accessible to wider ranges of broadcasters than the purely commercially driven TV producers of his day.

One cannot help but speculate while reading the book what Dr. Gattegno would think of how far things have come 23 years after his death with the rise of specialty channels devoted to everything from cooking to space travel as well as the advent of the world-wide web and YouTube, which has the potential to make broadcasters out of all educators. He probably would approve but also remark that we are still a long way from living without the printed word.

What We Owe Children Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s Classic Republished and Available Free to Read Online

An Indictment of the Current Teacher-Pupil Relationship

NEW YORK  What We Owe Children remains, perhaps, Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s most direct indictment of the teacher-student model as it persists in today’s public education system.

He rejects any concept that important learning occurs where “teachers are those people who take knowledge down from the shelves where it is displayed and hand it out to students who presumably need only memory in order to receive it.”

Dr. Gattengo rightly suggests that memory is not very powerful at all and, therefore, is a highly inefficient tool for learning. One only need ask: ‘How much have I retained of what I was taught in school?’ to see his point. But even more importantly, Dr. Gattegno accuses general education of leaving students unprepared to fully “meet what is new and strange”. I.E. education, as it commonly exists, actually puts a limit on one’s future.

In What We Owe Children, we see Dr. Gattegno’s concept “the subordination of teaching to learning” fully explained for the first time. Within this context, education becomes a process of self-education relying entirely on the natural powers of students to explore and learn anything worth knowing with only a minimal amount of informed guidance, which could come from teachers or parents.

“Essentially, the book shows how teaching and learning can properly work together to dramatically improve outcomes with less effort and within the limited time available to today’s teachers and parents,” said Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc. CEO Eaton Donald of the company’s decision to republish the book and make it available to read online for free and to be downloaded for $5.

A thoroughly radical approach, even by today’s standards, Dr. Gattegno proposed it at a time when  “inner city” school education in the United States was a hotly debated problem.  In the early 1970s, the approach did find its way into the highly publicized experiment of Harlem Community School P.S. 133, where it was widely reported to be producing miraculous results in the teaching of math and reading.

Today, the subordination of teaching to learning continues to inform Dr. Gattegno’s approaches to teaching mathematics (Gattegno Math), foreign languages (the Silent Way) and English literacy (Words in Color) throughout the world.

  • 5 - Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s The Universe of Babies Re-published and Free to Read Online

Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s The Universe of Babies Re-published and Free to Read Online

    When Learning Truly Begins

NEW YORK – Re-published and now available to read online for free, The Universe of Babies is a key work in unlocking how Dr. Caleb Gattegno arrived at developing his revolutionary new scientific approaches to education.

“Authored by Dr. Gattegno in 1973, the book elaborates for the first time on how babies investigate the world with the same rigor as the most advanced rocket scientist,” said Eaton Donald, CEO of Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc (ESWI).

“Back then, such a claim was a radical departure from the scientific community, which believed that any form of consciousness only appears after birth and along with the development of language,” said Mr. Donald.

But Dr. Gattegno, himself a brilliant scientist, who was likened to a modern-aged Copernicus by the New York Times, saw that conventional wisdom about the abilities of babies was highly flawed. He set out to investigate the topic of how we learn in a more “objective” way. He believed by doing so, it would lead to a whole new branch of science about education.

In The Universe of Babies, he challenges conventional wisdom about how and when babies start learning. He puts forth his own theory that we come already equipped with the “awareness” for full self-discovery and self-learning in utero. Since then, new technology with its ability to observe babies before birth has brought medical science closer to Dr. Gattegno’s view.

In practice, this theory was to play an incalculable role in creating the basis for a Science of Education and Dr. Gattegno’s own world-renowned and highly effective approaches to teaching mathematics (Gattegno Mathematics), foreign languages (The Silent Way) and literacy (Words in Color).

In all these approaches, the role of the teacher becomes someone who creates and oversees the completion of a defined set of challenges and not someone who simply dispenses facts and information for the purpose of memorization and rote.  Such an approach would indicate that we do come equipped with the facility to create our own knowledge base with the right stimulation.

The Universe of Babies is one of 100 papers and books that are being republished in this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary since Dr. Gattegno’s birth.

All Second Editions of his books are available for between $9.95 and $14.95. You can also read them online for free or download them for $5 apiece.

“We are privileged to be carrying on the legacy of Dr. Gattegno and will ensure that is it made available in appropriated forms for all succeeding generations of teachers, students and parents,” said Mr. Donald.

  • 6 - Classic Gattegno Book on ‘The Self’ Now Readily Available Online

Classic Gattegno Book on ‘The Self’ Now Readily Available Online

    How Mind Wins Over Matter

NEW YORK When it comes to the mind and the brain and what came first, you’ve got what is perhaps the key question that was asked by Dr. Caleb Gattegno in developing his Science of Education.

In The Mind Teaches the Brain, Dr. Gattegno admits it is a classic chicken and egg question that he solves in a very classic way by not fully choosing either the chicken or the egg. Instead, he postulates that what makes us who we are is already present at the time of conception in the form of energy, something along the lines of what Einstein has given us to believe about universal energy.

Therefore, that lump of grey matter we call the brain is far from determining who we are and most importantly for Dr. Gattegno, how we learn. What really determines all this, as well as what makes us different from everyone else, is actually determined by “the self”, which almost immediately after conception begins building our soma and eventually all of our personal attributes throughout the rest of our lives. This would seem to favor the concept of something we call our mind teaching us as opposed to our brain doing the teaching, or mind over matter, if you like.

For Gattegno the self conducts the process of our development through learning without the need of a teacher in the traditional sense of someone who conveys information and facts.  Therefore, for Dr. Gattegno, the role of a good teacher is simply to stimulate the self. Hence, his famous call for the “subordination of teaching to learning.”

“The concept of the self is fundamental to all the theories and pedagogues that were to inform Dr. Gattegno’s groundbreaking approaches to teaching Mathematics (Gattegno Mathematics), foreign languages (The Silent Way) and literacy (Words in Color),” said Eaton Donald, CEO of Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc (ESWI).

Now ESWI is making The Mind Teaches the Brain available in a newly published Second Edition; and for the first time can be read online for free or downloaded for $5.

Special Home Edition of Gattegno Math now Released

NEW YORK – Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc. (ESWI) today announced the release of a Special Home Edition of its renowned Gattegno Mathematics Series designed for parents to help their children get a leg up in mathematics.

The 20th Century’s leading educator and visionary Dr. Caleb Gattegno created the original series of books in the 1950s as a guide to using the Cuisenaire Rods, the world’s most successful and enduring math manipulative.

The Special Edition puts together all the elements of the original series in an attractive set of six books, a parents’ guidebook and a complete set of Algebricks Rods. Along with the easy-to-follow program instructions there are hundreds of well-crafted games and activities intended to have your child thinking like a mathematician within a few hours of use.

“This Special Home Edition is ideal for parents as no teaching or mathematical experience is required and it takes as little as 15 minutes a day,” said Educational Solutions CEO Eaton Donald. “The results for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students are unquestionable having been proved over decades of use.”

"As this year marks the centennial of Dr. Gattegno’s birth, we are also today announcing a special anniversary price of $99.”

    How it Works

Textbook 1 starts out with the simple instruction: “In your set of colored rods, find all those that are the same color. Mix all of the rods together again. Now find all of the rods that are the same length.”

With that accomplished, students begin to manipulate the Algebricks Rods in particular ways and describe the relationships between the rods in their own language, such as ‘two white rods are as long as one red rod.’ Once, aware of these relationships, students are introduced to mathematical language. The above statement can then become, “white+white=red” or “2w=r,” or “1+1=2”. The student never has to rely on their memory to produce these mathematical truths.

With this experience, students can easily verify their answers – they do not have to rely on the teacher to

know if they are correct. Students build on these initial experiences in the process of moving to the higher mathematical concepts of Algebra and Geometry.

Dr. Gattegno spent his lifetime researching how children learn. His system for teaching math is based on the idea that students can learn mathematics best by working on challenges which generate first hand experience. He believed that systems based on memorization are doomed to fail.

For more information on how it works, please refer to Re-inventing Mathematics Education.

Work of Leading Educator Caleb Gattegno Featured at IATEFL Annual Conference

Brighton, UK, April 14 – Advanced and current insights into the work of one of leading educator and visionary Dr. Caleb Gattegno will be presented on the first day of the world’s largest gathering of instructors devoted to teaching English as a foreign language.

Pronunciation is one of the largest challenges of language instruction and most methods are variations on “listen and repeat.” However, Gattegno scholars Dr. Roslyn Young and Dr. Piers Messum will present alternative “non-imitative ways” of teaching pronunciation in their presentation on April 15th at the 45th Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL).

The session will be a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth acquaintance with how Dr. Gattegno’s Science of Education would advocate teaching pronunciation in the same natural way that children learn how to speak.

The Brighton Conference will host 1,400 delegates from 100 countries who will participate in workshops and special events for four days (April 15-19). As well, extensive online video coverage will be broadcast to thousands of teachers around the world by British Council.

Dr. Gattegno would have turned 100 this year. His revolutionary approaches to teaching reading and writing (Words in Color), foreign languages (The Silent Way) and mathematics (Visible & Tangible Math) were rapidly and widely adopted in 46 countries on six continents. By the time of his death, Dr. Gattegno had begun using his vast understanding of how people learn in a variety of ways including experiments with children’s television (Pop Up series) and the “Infused Reading” program for the Apple computer.

Dr. Young and Dr. Messum have chosen this anniversary year to jointly publish a book titled: “How We Learn and How We Should Be Taught: An Introduction to the Work of Caleb Gattegno,” which explains the basis of The Science of Education for all learning.

The Gattegno Effect: 100 Voices on One of History's Greatest Educators to be released Fall 2011

New York, NY, April 05, 2011 - Educational Solutions Worldwide Inc. (ESWI) and The Association for the Science of Education (ASE) announced that they are jointly publishing a collective memoir about Dr. Caleb Gattegno in tribute to the 100th anniversary since his birth.

The Gattegno Effect: 100 Voices on One of History's Greatest Educators will be released this fall and will feature the submissions of 100 leading educators from all round the world recounting their experiences of knowing Dr. Gattegno personally and through his work.

“We are proud to carry forward the legacy of one of history’s foremost innovators,” said ESWI CEO Eaton Donald.

“Dr. Gattegno believed that education could be approached as a science. He very early on posited that we begin the process of self-learning in the embryonic stage and are essentially best suited to self-learning for the rest of our lives, a seemingly radical notion at the time. But today, cognitive studies are proving him correct and helping to explain why his actual approaches to teaching are so successful.”

The co-publishing of the memoir is part of an ongoing collaboration between Educational Solutions and the ASE to make Dr. Gattegno's vision of human learning accessible to teachers and students worldwide.

The book will be released to the public on November 1.

Dr. Gattegno was born in Alexandria, Egypt on November 11, 1911. He was educated at various western universities and achieved PhDs in mathematics and psychology as well as a master’s of education degree (MA). In 1957, as a member of the UNESCO mission on literacy to Ethiopia, he taught himself to read Amharic from the local newspapers during some down time in Addis Ababa at Christmas. That method would become the basis of his Words in Color program for teaching reading and his method for teaching a foreign language - The Silent Way. Ten years prior he had discovered Cuisenaire Rods and applied them to the teaching of mathematics.

By the time of his death in 1988, his highly unique approaches and materials for teaching were being employed in more than 40 countries on six continents. His vast scientifically based inquiries had produced seminal books on the nature of learning itself. He also wrote on the potential of mass media and new technologies to facilitate and advance education, which found early expression in the successful “Pop Up” series designed for U.S. network television, and the “Infused Reading” program for the Apple computer. Dr. Gattegno’s theories and materials continue to be developed and applied throughout the world.

“The memoir, by drawing its materials from all over the world and in multi-lingual form, reflects the universal appeal of Dr. Gattegno’s work today,” said Mr. Donald.

    Authors Took Path Less Traveled

Each memoir submission represents a personal journey toward understanding and applying Dr. Gattegno’s monumental pedagogy, which is based on the percept that “only awareness is educable in man.” For those who chose this journey, it meant taking the path less traveled in education. Much of what is revealed in the memoir is why that was a satisfying professional choice and one that could also strike a blow towards personal liberation.

Meanwhile, the collective journey reveals to us “Dr. G” , a man who was considered as much a role model, philosopher, psychologist, scientist, inventor and author, as he was a great teacher.

Typically, the authors find Dr. Gattegno while seeking to better themselves as teachers through a deeper understanding of how students best learn.

Such was the case with Australian teacher Andrew Weiler, whose faith and hope in the alternative school movement of the 1970s had been quickly shattered when he realized that the movement’s tools fell far short of its rhetoric. However, soon after encountering Dr. Gattegno’s approach to teaching foreign languages – The Silent Way, Weiler states: “(it) educated both myself and my students alike, prompting my creativity and encouraging attentiveness and creativity … I continually built on my understandings from these experiences, my unfolding awareness, and the experiences of my students.”

The tools he acquired from Dr. Gattegno’s approach allowed Weiler to successfully create his own program for teaching Indonesian to Australia engineers, a testament, he recounts, to the creative versatility of Dr. Gattegno’s fundamental approach to education.

Human Beings As ‘Pure Learning Systems’

Yoko Yasuda, now a teacher in Tokyo, describes the discovery of Dr. Gattegno’s work as akin to looking for a box of matches and finding a volcano.

Her search for betterment began as a young student in 1993. She was seeking the best ways and methods to teach Japanese to foreign students. In choosing The Silent Way, she got more than she bargained for: “I learned that learning is related to existence,” she recounts.

During her practical training, she was also constantly asked to consider: "‘What is learning?’ ‘What am I made of?’ and ‘How have I been learning?’

“I came to think of a human being as a pure learning system and how its power could face any kind of challenge in the future,” she recounts.

    The Miracle of Communication

The memoir also delves into elements of Dr. Gattegno’s public personae. English Professor Bill Bernhardt, relates how, “listening to Dr. G speak was an act of discovery, even though it could be difficult to follow the exact thread of his discourse. As he often remarked, 'language is for expression rather than for communication. Communication—when it occurs—is a miracle.'”

Bernhardt goes on to dissect characteristics of Dr. Gattegno’s ways of expression, including his liberal use of aphorisms, such as, “'I don’t prepare a lesson—I prepare myself’ and ‘When you write a note, the paper remembers—you forget.'”

A Feast of Gattegno Sayings and Expressions

The memoir is a feast of Dr. Gattegno sayings and expressions that create a picture of not only a brilliant scientist and educator, but also a man possessed of uncommon and infectious wisdom.

(In one of his famously eloquent New York Times articles, writer McCandish Phillips compared Dr. Gattegno to Copernicus, the ultimate challenger of conventional wisdom, but at the same time noted that Dr. Gattegno came off as someone, “no more radical sounding than a favorite uncle.”)

Steve DeGiulio, currently an English Professor in New Mexico, in his memoir recounts a story where: “A teacher who was inspired by observing Gattegno, but frustrated at his own less successful efforts, asked him: ‘How do you get them to respect you?’ The answer came in a very quiet voice, ‘By being someone they respect.'"

    Other Gattegno Centennial Events

Other events planned for the Gattegno Centennial include his being honored at the annual meeting of the prestigious Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM), April 18-21, in Telford, U.K. Dr. Gattegno was instrumental in founding the organization. In Haiti, a new school will be built to carry on the Gattegno mathematics approach, which has been in place there for more than a decade. The Bronx School for Better Learning in New York will be marking the centennial with a cake cutting. Other centennial events are planned in Japan, France, Switzerland and Australia. Association of Teachers of Mathematics Honours Caleb Gattegno at Annual Conference

DERBY, UKApril 14 - The works of leading educator and visionary Dr. Caleb Gattegno will be front and centre at the 50th Annual Conference of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM)April 18-21, 2011 in Telford, U.K., it was announced today.

Dr. Gattegno, who would have turned 100 this year, co-founded the ATM in 1952. In recognition of his contributions to the ATM, and to mathematics and education in general, a third of the conference's workshops as well as a special plenary session will be devoted to him and his vast array of works in education.

Dr. Gattegno believed that every student could be good at math, and he proved it by developing the uses ofCuisenaire Rods in his Visible & Tangible Math system. Within five years of making his system commercially available, it was adopted by teachers in 10,000 schools in more than 100 countries, making it one of the fastest growing and most widely used educational innovations in history.

"Just as importantly, Dr. Gattegno worked extensively on the learning of reading and foreign languages with 'Infused Reading' for the Apple computer, 'The Silent Way' for learning a foreign language, and 'Words in Color'for reading and writing. He also challenged many in the educational world to consider what is involved in learning, and how our actions as teachers should be subordinated to the way in which children learn," said conference organizer Karen Winte.

    ABOUT ATM

The Association of Teachers of Mathematics was established in 1952 to encourage the development of mathematics education such that it is more closely related to the needs of the learner. The ATM is governed by its General Council. There are about 4,000 members - mainly teachers in primary and secondary schools. It is a registered charity and all profits from subscriptions and trading are re-invested into mathematics education.

The ATM provides opportunities to bring together all concerned with mathematics education for all age ranges. It supports local branches, informal support networks, courses and conferences. The Association of Teachers of Mathematics produces policy statements and publishes response to National and Government initiatives. Past statements and responses are archived here.

The ATM has a number of 'Working Groups' whose function is to examine particular areas of the mathematics education field to develop policy, resources and action. The high point of the year is the annual Easter conference which is a celebration of mathematics teaching by hundreds of people who still get great enjoyment from their chosen career.
