Online reading program, Readably.me, a Toronto based start-up is offering their program free to educators and parents during this time while everyone is adjusting to school closures and distance education.
Readably is a structured approach to literacy that focuses on the systematic development of decoding skills and sound symbol association [phonemic awareness], the foundational skills of successful reading.
The materials included are:
· 140 Distraction free videos that connect letters and sounds
· 40 Practice readers
· 100+ activities to improve perception and retention
· Downloadable letter tiles
Through the videos, we introduce color coded letter tiles that form the sounds and spellings of English. Readably uses color, motion, shape and position to generate awareness of how the system of reading works.
Color – in the early lessons, color allows the learner to see individual sounds. In the later lessons, color allows the learner to see that the same letter shape can make a different sound [for example ‘s’ in ‘is’ or ‘us’].
Motion keeps the learner active and engaged, using their skill of anticipation to its full potential.
Shape doesn’t always tell the full story, so we combine shapes with colors to give learners the best possible understanding of the relationship between phoneme and the grapheme relationship.
Position allows the learner to see that a sounds can move to different positions in the word.
“Some teachers are using the screen share function of Zoom to do decoding work with kids! Parents and kids can print the tiles at home and work with the teacher on zoom!” It’s a fun and effective way to keep on learning as we adapt to distance education.
